It is almost impossible to imagine Switzerland without its cows. Like no other animal, these bovine beauties are an integral part of the landscape – and of farming. However, pigs, poultry and sheep also are important. And the concept of animals grazing on alpine pastures is far from being a cliché; in Switzerland, it is part of a living culture. Ecological, animal-friendly livestock farming is very highly rated here in Switzerland. Factory farming is unknown within our borders.

Animal-friendly livestock housing and outdoor runs

Swiss meat deserves complete consumer confidence, as the standards set for livestock farming are extremely high. This is hardly surprising, considering the fact that here on the family-run farms, contact and relationships to the animals are very close. The state, moreover, subsidises responsible livestock farming – for instance, in the form of programmes such as ”Particularly Animal-Friendly Stabling“ (PAS programme) or ”Regular Outdoor Exercise for Live-stock“ (ROEL programme). Two thirds of the farms in Switzerland are already participating in ROEL, a third in PAS. The farmers’ efforts are well worth it: their animals are healthier, the meat delicious.
An extensive range of labelling programmes also lays down further criteria for adequate animal living and feed quality.

Stringent animal protection legislation

In addition to voluntary efforts, stringent legislation and regulations also are in place to ensure livestock farming that does not compromise the welfare of the animals. The animals are kept under conditions that accommodate their natural needs: calves, for instance, are not fettered for their first four months and cows are ensured regular exercise outside their sheds. Independent inspections guarantee adherence to these quality standards.
