Whilst Swiss organic farming has increased significantly over the last few years, the number of agricultural holdings has decreased on the whole. However, in 2008, the number of organic farms also decreased slightly for the first time. At the same time the average size of the farms has increased. In 2008 there were still approximately 60,900, of which around 52,600 had farm animals (42,900 with cattle, 9,600 with pigs and 1,000 with chickens).
