Farm animal stocks
By far the largest proportion of cattle kept in Switzerland are dairy cows (86%). As a result, milk production has a significant influence on domestic veal and beef production. Due to a strong growth in milk quantities over the past two years (2008: +5%), the number of dairy cattle also increased for the first time in two years during the reporting year. The number of dams and suckler cows continued to rise in 2008, a development that documents the successful ex-pansion of specialised beef cattle production. The increased livestock population also brought about a slight decline in veal calf slaughter (–1.5%).
