With good reason - Swiss meat

Switzerland offers the best conditions to allow farmers and meat producers to work in an animal and environmentally-friendly manner. As a result, this makes Swiss meat more sustainable and ecological than imported meat.

Sustainable use of land

More than two thirds of farmland are green areas that are used for livestock farming. These areas are often so steep or are so high up that they cannot be used at all for arable farming or fruit production. By contrast, ruminants can use the roughage on the meadows and hilltop pas-tures as food – and we can then go on to produce high-quality food, such as cheese and meat from this.

Low fresh water requirement

Thanks to the high levels of rainfall in Switzerland, we are able to largely forgo artificial watering of the meadows and pastures. Whilst farming requires around 70% of all fresh water across the world, the figure is only 2% in Switzerland.

Species-appropriate feed

Swiss livestock is given feed that is strictly controlled and appropriate for both the species and the environment. Ruminants in particular are given predominantly roughage, i.e. grass and hay, and comparatively less concentrated feed. The animal feed is free from genetically-modified organisms and from animal meal. Performance-enhancing hormones and antibiotics are also strictly forbidden.

Fewer imports for feed

In Switzerland we produce 86% of animal feed ourselves. Only 14% is therefore imported. This is mainly soya, up to 93% of which is obtained from certified sustainable production.

Strict animal protection law

Switzerland has one of the strictest animal protection laws in the world. This law guarantees that the animals in our country are fed appropriately for their breed and are kept as humanely as possible. It also dictates that travel time when transporting animals must be 6 hours at the most. However, in the EU for example, transport times of up to 24 hours are permitted for pigs.

Voluntary measures

A large proportion of Swiss farming engages in the voluntary programmes “Particularly animal-friendly stabling systems [Besonders tierfreundliche Stallungssysteme] BTS” and “Regular exercise in the open air [Regelmässiger Auslauf im Freien] RAUS”.
